GANDHI JAYANTI CELEBRATION ON 2ND OCTOBER 06, MONDAY UNDER CURRENT EVENTS PROGRAM (56TH SESSION DEDICATED TO ‘MAHATMA GANDHI) AT ICC SUNNYVALE.

Gandhi Jayanti program was organized at ICC Sunnyvale under the chairmanship of Talat Hasan, chairperson ‘ICC’ along with a Guest Speaker, Anayya Deshpande a Gandhian. All paid due respect to Mahatma Gandhi on his 137 Th Birth Anniversary at the beginning of the program.
The program was inaugurated with Sarvadharma Prarthana, which was recited by Shankuntala Bahadur.
Bharat Desai presented present events in the world, which reflects violence, killing, and sectarian conflicts. He said that solution of all problems is in Gandhi preaching. He said that even world leaders and including American leaders are of the same view. In that context Gandhian ideology is more relevant to day.
Bharat Desai then introduced the Guest Speaker Anayya Despande to the audience.
Thereafter the Guest speaker Anayya Despande spoke analytically on Gandhian philosophy. He raised question why Gandhiji was great? What was his non- violence and Satyagraha? He said Gandhiji was great as he practiced what he preached. His non-violence meant not hurt any one in any form. He always supported the violence in self defense. He always acted as per his inner voice i.e. Truth. In that sense he was karmayogi.
The chief guest of the function Talat Hasan also gave talk on Gandhiji. She gave with illustrations how Gandhiji recognized the power of the women and always supported their cause. She said Gandhiji was a great reformist. He was for communal harmony and believed that Hindu and Muslim of the India cannot be separated.
The several distinguished Seniors, Shuresh Sharma, Chandravadan Desai, V K Jotwani, R B Singh, Sanat Desai, Manoher Wanchoo, A Narayanswami, Jayshree Vasavada, Premlatabahen Majamundar, gave talk on Gandhiji and some of them described their experiences of meeting him in their life time.
Sita Dorairaj sang ‘Vaishnav jan to ene kahie’. Pushpa Mathur sang the Bengali song written by Ravindranath Tagore for Gandhiji. Amrita Varma also presented very old but popular song regarding Mahatma Gandhi. The ‘Dhun’, which was presented in-group of Shakuntala Bahadur, Seema, Sita Dorairaj and Pushpa Mathur, was also well received by members. Those distinguished lady seniors and singers made whole atmosphere very pious and pleasant. It was befitting to the birth anniversary of father of the nation.
The small booklet Title ‘Homage to Mahatma Gandhi was released by Talat Hasan. Prof. A Srinivasan edited the booklet.
The meeting was very well attended.
Pradeep Joshi welcomed the Chief Guest and M Santhnam proposed vote of thanks.
Bharat Desai coordinated and composed the program.
